Tips to resolve “Direct read found corrupt page with error…” Error

MOM (Microsoft Operations Manager) contains a Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Management Pack that generates an alert whenever one or more than one event(s) are logged. These event id(s) mainly occur when the Exchange 2007 database gets corrupted/damaged. The information displayed in these event ids helps the Exchange user to find the cause and resolution of the database corruption. However, if the resolution for database corruption is not clear in the event id and the user wants to access the database, then s/he can restore the database from an updated backup. However, if no backup is available or backup falls short of repairing, then s/he can use ‘ESEUTIL/P’ utility to repair the database. But, if the repair utility too fails to repair the corrupted database, then the user needs to opt for an effective Exchange Server Repair application.

Consider a practical case, where you encounter the below error message that appears while trying to access the Exchange database:

%1 (%2) %3Direct read found corrupted page %4 with error %5. If this error persists, please restore the database from a previous backup.

After the above error message appears, the Exchange Server 2007 database becomes inaccessible.

Cause:

The above error message appears when the Exchange Server database is corrupt. Corruption in database can occur due to various reasons like, virus infection, anti-virus scanning, improper server shutdown, and more.

Resolution:

For systematic recovery of data after the above scenario, the user needs to run ‘ESEUTIL/P’ command. This command enables you to repair corrupt Exchange Server database post any logical corruption. However, if the above command fails to get resolved, and there is no backup available, then you will need to search for a commercial utility that can perform comprehensive Exchange Server Recovery.
