Ways to backup Exchange database

Microsoft Exchange Server is the most favoured server application only because of simple but effective technology used in it. It has been observed that user generally takes very less time in-order to become fluent in Exchange functionality comparing to other server side application. Basically the file system of Exchange holds two types of files. Priv.edb holds user’s mailbox data and Pub.edb keeps user’s general data. Safety is major aspect of any organisation, it has become utmost priority to secure data in today’s business environment where every transaction or information sharing has become digital. Therefore it is advisable to the user to maintain regular backup of their crucial data to counterattack emergency situation. There are various types of ways by which user can perform backup operation:

VSS (Volume Shadow Copy Service) Backup:-
This mode of backup involves Volume Shadow Copy technology to produce online snapshot of MS Exchange Server database. Which can be further stored on local drive or on Tivoli Storage Manager Server storage. Such type of backup involves large volume size.

Streaming Backup:-
It is also known as specialized API backup that is associated with MS Exchange Server repository engine. The process sometime also termed as Exchange Server streaming backup and restore API. The mode is often used by Microsoft for maintaining backup of files.

The abovementioned were few ways to perform the backup operation but there are few issues related with the modes stated. Microsoft does not support Streaming backup for cluster continuous replication, local continuous replication and standby continuous replication databases. If you face any further issue while taking backup using abovementioned process than you can make use of Microsoft free utility known as Eseutil to recover damaged file. There are two mode of recovery performed using Eseutil. If you use Eseutil/R mode than soft recovery is performed and if you use Eseutil/C then hard recovery is processed. Although it has been observed that free utility by Microsoft fails to provide expected result. In that case you can go for third party Exchange recovery tool.
Stellar Phoenix Mailbox Exchange Server Recovery is one of the best solutions for recovering corrupt EDB data files. The tool restores all the data items available in database that too by maintaining authenticity. The utility is advance enough to support 64 bit Microsoft Office. The software is compatible with latest and earlier most versions of Exchange Server. Quick Scan and Selective recovery are some of the features of the software. The free demo version of the tool can be downloaded from the respective website.
